A Memory of Dorothy Bell
by Ranga

This is in memory of Dorothy Bell. I thought it is important to share this information as it is part of the history of Reiki Jin Kei Do.

Before I left US to migrate to Australia, Beth Sanders, Reiki Master, who was one of the first Reiki Masters from Kathleen Milners group to train under me in the very early form of Reiki Jin Kei Do ( I named Reiki taught by Ven Seiji Takamori, Reiki Jin Kei Do to differentiate it from all other systems of Reiki). After teaching several Reiki Masters from other systems of Reiki and seeing the significant differences, I created the term Jin Kei Do to emphasise the philosophical foundation of the teachings and lineage.

Beth had been to UK to teach and had a few requests to return to UK to teach. One of the requests was from Dorothy and Gordon. They had studied Reiki Level I with Barbara McGregor. Beth gave me all the contacts in UK requesting her to visit and teach and wanted me to teach.

I wrote to all in the list but received only 1 response. That was from Dorothy. She said that what I wrote to her about Reiki truly resonated with her and she would like to learn from me.

As I and my wife were stopping over in UK to visit my sister, it was a good opportunity for us to visit Dorothy and Gordon in Newcastle upon Tyne. After arriving in UK and spending a few days with my sister and family, we took the train to Dorothy's place.

We were met by Gordon and Dorothy at the station if I remember correctly and took us to their beautiful home. It was a special place as each floor had many Buddha statues. They offered us their upstairs studio apartment to stay and I started the Reiki level I training introducing both Dorothy and Gordon to the unique teachings and energy of Reiki Jin Kei Do.

I still remember the wonderful vegetarian dinner that evening and going with Gordon to their health food store " Mandala" to pick up a sauce. This must have planted a seed in my mind as we ended buying a Health Food Store in Mosman after arriving in Australia.

The Reiki Initiations for both Dorothy and Gordon were very special as they were gifted healers and meditators for a long time. I still remember Dorothy's words after the initiation- "I felt that the light that had gone off has been turned on again" and was ecstatic in her joy after rediscovering her true potential. Gordon's experience was of a more serene nature as is his character. These events occurred 30 years ago so some details may not be as accurate I would have like them to be.

Dorothy and Gordon completed the Reiki Jin Kei Do level 1 training and requested me to stay on to teach level 2. Since they both had been practising Reiki level 1 before and this initiation was more of re-initiation and introduction to the Jin Kei Do path, I felt they both were ready for the level 2. They invited few more Reiki students form a small class of about 6 and I taught Reiki level 2 after re-initiating the new students to Reiki Jin Kei Do level 1.

After this we left for my sister's and from there on journey through Europe before leaving for Australia. Dorothy and Gordon helped form with other UK practitions the organisation Reiki Jin Kei Do UK through their dedication and practice to the teachings. They taught many students such as Steve Gooch, who is now a very dedicated and prominent teacher in UK and globally.

We kept in contact and in 1996 Dorothy and Gordon visited us in Australia to receive Master training and Buddho training.

It started with a situation. My wife was pregnant with my daughter, Anya, and 2 days before Gordon and Dorothy's arrival I contracted chickenpox. Fortunately, they had 4 weeks and 1 week was to travel in Australia after the training. So they gave me 1 week to recover from chickenpox to travel and we started the training on week 2.

It was a wonderful 3 weeks of teaching. My memory isn't clear as to Gordon re-visiting me later for further advanced training in Buddho. I believe he did as I now remember a photo taken Gordon carrying my daughter Anya when she was about 2 years old. Since then I visited UK once travelling with Faye Wenke to teach and review Reiki Jin Kei Do and Buddho to many of Dorothy and Gordon's students, Faye's students, and Sarah Verela's students. Dorothy and Gordon invited both of us to stay in their new beautiful home and to present to about 30 of their students.

Dorothy was suffering from several conditions, I was grateful to be there to do a couple of seated treatments for her. Dorothy was a very strong disciplined and compassionate being who appreciated the practice deeply.

The fact she embraced the spiritual practices in her last moments in this physical realm shows that it is how you have lived your daily life that prepares you for the last moments. Consciousness when it is time to leave the five ailing aggregates (body and five senses), the mind connects to a realm of vibrational state that resonates with its vibrational state.

Reiki Jin Kei Do principles prepare you on your path with mindfulness as the core practice in daily life to know your mind and its reactions and the body's responses. Developing the Jin (Benevolence) aspect in conjunction with the Kei (Wisdom) meditation techniques help integrate both aspects into to daily life or Do (The Way, Lifestyle/Lifepath) The gentle yet powerful Reiki which heightens our awareness to the subtle energy of our body is the underpinning force that brings Jin and Kei to the life path of the practitioner.

So, Dorothy hearing the mantras and experiencing the flow of Reiki and the healing many who sent to her reached a divine realm to continue her journey and helping beings like the Bodhisattva she was this life.
